What knowledge is related to eye health? Everyone must come to learn about it!

17/12/2024 Glasses Magic

Seek medical attention immediately when experiencing eye discomfort or sudden vision loss.

Although both are related to eye care, optometrists in our optometry centers don't have the right to prescribe medications for eye diseases. They are not ophthalmologists and generally don't have the ability to treat eye diseases or perform surgeries.

So, if you ever feel uncomfortable in your eyes or have a sudden drop in vision, don't go to optical shops or outside optometry centers. Instead, it's best to go directly to the ophthalmology department of a top-tier tertiary hospital. That's where you should go.

I once met a middle-aged customer who liked playing badminton. One day, he came to me in a hurry, saying that his eyes were a bit uncomfortable and his vision had dropped a little. He asked me if he should change his glasses lenses and asked me to check carefully.

When I examined his eyes under the slit lamp, I found that the pupil of his eye was irregular. A normal person's pupil is a relatively symmetrical circle, but his was like a pancake that had been bitten in several places. Moreover, a small amount of blood could be seen in the anterior chamber. The optometry results also showed a relatively high degree of astigmatism. I gasped in shock. This must be an eye injury.I wondered if the lens and corneal shape had been damaged.

I asked him if the drop in vision was due to an injury and when it started.

He casually said that he had been hit by a badminton shuttlecock.

I said, "You were wearing glasses. How could the shuttlecock hit your eyeball?"

He replied, "Well, it's inconvenient to wear glasses when exercising. They easily fall off when I sweat, so I took them off to play. Without glasses, my vision was blurry, and I couldn't dodge in time and got hit by the shuttlecock."

Hearing what he said, I felt a pang of anxiety. How fast the shuttlecock flies! I told him that the drop in his vision was probably related to the eye injury. Even if I refitted him with a new pair of glasses, his vision might improve slightly, but it would only treat the symptoms, not the root cause. He should first go to the ophthalmology department to have his eye injury carefully evaluated.

It wouldn't be too late to come to me to get glasses fitted after that.

He said, "I always came to you to get glasses when my vision dropped before. Just give me the pair of glasses that I tried on just now and seemed clearer. I'm in a hurry today. I'll go to see the doctor when I'm free."

I repeatedly told him that he must go to the ophthalmology department right away. I was so worried, but he didn't care at all and just left after getting the glasses fitted.

Guess what? Was that the end of it? No. About a week later, he came back to me again.

The reason was the same. He complained that he couldn't see clearly with the newly fitted glasses. He muttered to himself. I was shocked and extremely panicked. To put it bluntly, I was almost scared to tears. It was like seeing a ghost in the middle of the night and seeing something you shouldn't see. Yes, he was the person I shouldn't have seen.

He shouldn't have shown up here. He should have been on the operating table in the ophthalmology department of a top-tier tertiary hospital. When I examined his eyes with the slit lamp again, I found that his pupil was still deformed, the iris was damaged and incomplete, and there was still fluid oozing from the anterior chamber.

I almost pleaded with him, saying, "Don't ask me to fit you with glasses anymore. It's not a problem with your vision. If you don't get timely treatment, you may even go completely blind due to an intraocular infection. If you miss the best time for surgery, it may cause irreversible damage to your vision."

I personally guessed that due to the delay in treatment, his vision must have already suffered irreversible damage.

Maybe it was even less than 0.1. Since I sent him away that time, seven or eight years have passed. He has never come to me to get glasses fitted again. I don't know what happened to him later. I hope his eye didn't go completely blind.

This also reminds us that if you are going to exercise, people with myopia had better wear contact lenses. It's more convenient and safer.

I also often meet many beautiful women who are eager to look pretty by wearing colored contact lenses but don't have good hygiene habits. Some even sleep with them on, causing corneal surface edema and damage to the epithelial layer.

However, instead of going to see an ophthalmologist, they go to optical shops, complaining that their eyes are a bit uncomfortable and that they can't see clearly with frame glasses and asking to have their glasses refitted. In such cases, I also directly tell them to go to see an ophthalmologist immediately.

When the corneal light reflex is not a regular circle, it's strange if they can see clearly. I'm also worried that their corneas may suffer irreversible damage.

So, I remind everyone that if your eyes are uncomfortable or your vision suddenly drops, please go to the ophthalmology department of a top-tier tertiary hospital first. Those of us who do optometry can't diagnose eye diseases.

For people with myopia, what they should fear the most is not poor vision but the complications of myopia.

People with myopia must, must control the increase in their degree of myopia and regard controlling the increase in the degree as the most important thing. This is what I've spent the most time emphasizing, but it's also something that many people with myopia neglect. Many friends with myopia, especially those with moderate or low myopia, think that if their degree increases and they can't see clearly, they can just change to a new pair of glasses.

In fact, it's not like that. Compared to poor vision, what people with myopia fear the most are the complications. The probability of these complications will increase significantly as the degree of myopia increases, especially for those with high myopia.

In fact, apart from not being able to see clearly in the distance, another notable feature of myopia is the change in the eye structure, mainly the elongation of the eye axis, which makes the fundus of the eye more vulnerable.

If it's hard for you to understand, let me give you an example. You can compare the eyeball to a balloon. The elongation of the eye axis is like the expansion of the balloon. The more the balloon expands, the thinner its wall becomes, and the thinner the wall is, the easier it is to break.

The growth of the eye axis and the changes in the fundus will bring a series of complications, such as floaters, retinal detachment, macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract, and so on. Some of these complications can cause almost irreversible damage to the eyes and can even lead to blindness. The treatment methods are not very optimistic, and the prognosis is not ideal, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and retinal detachment.

You must change bad eye-using habits in time, use your eyes moderately, pay attention to combining work and rest when using your eyes, and definitely control the increase in the degree of myopia. The earlier you take measures, the lower the final degree will be, and the lower the risk of complications of myopia will be.

So, myopia is not as simple as you think. Constantly emphasizing controlling the increase in the degree doesn't mean that I just want to sell you an extra pair of glasses or a high-priced product. I'd rather be a nagging person who always warns you than see you really encounter these problems one day. Losing vision is extremely cruel and helpless for a person's mental state.

People with high myopia should avoid activities that can cause an increase in intraocular pressure.

Whenever I mention this point to others, most people scoff at it and don't take it seriously.

They say, "It's not as serious as you say."

"I saw on Douyin that someone with over 1,000 degrees of myopia was bench-pressing 60 kilograms."

"My friend has 1,000 degrees of myopia and still often plays football. He even plays as a forward."

"My classmate has 1,200 degrees of myopia and still plays as a center in basketball."

"I'm fine too. I have 800 degrees of myopia. I went to play the Pirate Ship in Happy Valley with my friends last week, and I didn't go blind."

Well said! That's great! If you would go blind immediately after a little bump, then I wouldn't just suggest that you avoid activities that can cause an increase in intraocular pressure. I would directly suggest that you keep your eyes closed and never open them and lie in bed all day without getting up.

All right. It's okay if you don't listen to my advice, but you keep arguing with me. I understand you. The ignorant are fearless. You haven't seen people who had retinal detachment again after lifting a heavy object or those who had retinal detachment after a collision while playing basketball.

Some friends with high myopia even gradually had retinal detachment without realizing it. I'm just telling you that these intense physical contact sports activities that can cause an increase in intraocular pressure will increase the risk of retinal detachment.

It doesn't mean that it will definitely happen, but because the fundus of people with high myopia is more vulnerable, the probability will increase a lot. You only have one pair of eyes.

Isn't it better to be a bit more cautious? Do you know what high-risk behaviors are? Can you understand? Think about it carefully, but don't misunderstand.

You say there are thousands of sports activities, and you insist on doing something you're not suitable for. Why do you have to be so stubborn about your weakness? Wouldn't it be better to choose some other safe sports?

If it's true myopia, you must wear glasses.

Every time I mention this point, I always get scolded. It's not because I didn't explain it well or didn't do enough in science popularization. It's simply because I'm a person who fits glasses. Because there are always people who jump out and say that you can't believe what I say. Look at what I do. Those who understand will understand.

What's the matter?

Can't people who sell cars popularize knowledge about safe driving? Can't dentists talk about how to take care of teeth? Does a chef teaching you how to cook mean that he wants to trick you into going to his restaurant?

This is not good, young people. Reflect on it carefully and don't make such silly mistakes again. On Zhihu, harmony is valued. We should be civilized and not fight among ourselves. We shouldn't deceive or make sneak attacks. It's not good.

Once you are myopic, it means that you have lost part of your distant vision. The lost function can't be restored through the adjustment of the human eye. You must get help from the outside, such as frame glasses, orthokeratology lenses, contact lenses, laser surgery, and so on.

Wearing glasses can restore your distant vision, make it easier for your eyes to see in the distance, and avoid visual fatigue caused by not being able to see clearly in the distance, thus preventing further increase in myopia.

Based on my usual observations and summaries, those children who are highly myopic, with five or six hundred degrees of myopia when they first wear glasses, usually have parents who love them deeply. Because their parents told them that if they wear glasses for myopia, they will never be able to take them off and the degree will keep increasing.

Mom and Dad didn't let you wear glasses because they thought it was for your own good! How deep the love is, how much the regret will be.

How I wish that when children are just found to be myopic, their parents could correct their vision (with frame glasses or orthokeratology lenses) in time and change their bad habits of using their eyes at close range in time, so that the myopia develops at the slowest rate until their eyeballs are fully developed and the degree is stable when they grow up.

I believe that if parents can do this, there may not be so many people with extremely high myopia.

Wearing glasses won't make the degree of myopia keep increasing.

Many friends with myopia have such doubts, especially parents. They always think that once you start wearing glasses, the degree will keep increasing.

In fact, it's a misunderstanding. It's not like that. Some people think that they can wear glasses whenever they want and don't have to wear them if they don't feel like it.

Goodness! When going to the hospital to get medicine, they are so obedient. But when it comes to wearing glasses, everyone becomes an expert and gives random instructions. And all their relatives seem to be experts too.

My uncle said that once you wear glasses, you won't be able to take them off. My aunt said that wearing glasses will make you highly myopic. My friend said that the less you wear them, the better. I'm just wondering. Why don't you say to the doctor when you go to the hospital, "I'll take the medicine you prescribe when I feel like it. I won't take it if I'm not happy. I'll take it as food when I'm in a good mood."

Except for those with a very low degree of myopia who don't need to wear glasses when looking at things nearby, the vast majority of people need to wear them consistently.

Then why do my friends and relatives all say that wearing glasses will make you more myopic? It's because these people won't change their previous bad habits of using their eyes at close range after getting their glasses fitted. Or they may even use their eyes at close range even more intensively after getting glasses (such as when entering junior high school or senior high school).

The fundamental reason for the increase in the degree is the burden of using eyes at close range plus bad eye-using habits. We should analyze the fundamental reason instead of finding a scapegoat to seek self-comfort. It's meaningless for myopia prevention and control.

When I was in high school and my degree was increasing, I ate every day. According to your logic, the more I ate, the more myopic I would become. I almost believed it myself and regretted that I didn't go on a hunger strike back then.

Once you are myopic, you should change your bad eye-using habits in time.

Some people may say, "This is a simple truth, isn't it? Won't people even ignore this?" Sometimes, the simpler something is, the easier it is for people to forget it.

The easier something is to do, the less attention it gets. Many people become myopic, especially children. Their parents will say, "Is there any kind of glasses that can control myopia? No matter how expensive they are, I'll buy them as long as they are effective."

They happily buy a pair of glasses that cost 5,000 yuan and come back to the store a year later with complaints.

They ask, "Why did my child's degree increase so quickly even though I bought such expensive glasses?"

Sorry, glasses neither have the disadvantage of increasing the degree nor the advantage of preventing the increase in the degree of myopia.

They are just "vision correction devices," nothing more. Even if you buy glasses with myopia prevention and control functions, if you don't change your wrong habits of using your eyes at close range, it will still be useless.

The increase in the degree is mainly related to eye-using habits.

  • Does the lighting environment for reading and writing meet the standards?

The required illuminance for reading and writing at close range is about 1,000 lux, while the illuminance of most household lamps is around 150 lux, which is far from enough. Besides increasing the illuminance on the desk surface, you also need to add supplementary ambient light.

  • Have you corrected your posture for reading and writing?

When reading and writing, you should strictly follow the "one fist, one foot, one inch" principle: keep your chest one fist away from the desk when reading and writing. Don't lie on the table to write or read. Keep your eyes at least one foot (about 33 centimeters) away from the book. Hold the pen about one inch (about 3 centimeters) away from the tip.

  • Do you take a break to relax every 30 - 45 minutes when looking at things nearby?

If you look at things nearby for too long, it's very easy to cause ciliary muscle spasm and paralysis, resulting in accommodative myopia and further increasing the degree of myopia.

  • Have you increased the time for outdoor activities?

Studies have shown that if you keep two hours of outdoor activities every day, the probability of myopia will be greatly reduced. Nowadays, children are trapped in small spaces like pigeon cages and have less and less time to enjoy the outdoors, and the risk of myopia is increasing day by day.

Besides increasing outdoor activities, I also suggest that parents don't give mobile phones to children during their growth and development period. Be a bit stricter and don't indulge them. Drive them out to play.

Every time I ask parents about this, they say that they are busy and didn't know there were so many things to pay attention to. Then they turn around and scold the children, shifting their attention and passing the blame.

They say, "I told you not to play with your mobile phone, but you just wouldn't listen."

I'm surprised and say, "Didn't I tell you to reduce your child's time of looking at things nearby? Why did you buy a mobile phone for the child?"

They reply, "We parents are busy, and the child said that he could take online tutoring classes on the mobile phone, so we bought one for him."

I just want to ask these parents born in the 1970s and 1980s, when you bought an electronic dictionary back then, did you only use it to look up English words and never play games like Snake?

Astigmatism is also a type of myopia. Don't under-correct or not correct it.

I often meet many "opinionated" friends with myopia who are very resistant to astigmatism, as if astigmatism were like "cancer" in the eyes. They are extremely scared.

In fact, most people have more or less some astigmatism. There are actually relatively few people who have no astigmatism at all. Most astigmatism is caused by the irregularity of the cornea or the astigmatism of the lens.

If astigmatism is not corrected, there will be double images and blurred edges whether looking at things in the distance or nearby, especially at night when the vision drops relatively quickly.

So, in order to achieve clear and lasting vision, astigmatism should be corrected as much as possible on the premise that it can be tolerated. There's nothing to be afraid of about astigmatism.

Don't wear your glasses when cooking in the kitchen.

I often mention this to my customers, but few of them take it seriously. Later, I printed "Never wear your regular glasses when cooking in the kitchen" on kitchen aprons and gave one to each customer. Only in this way did I ease my inner uneasiness and anxiety.

Keeping the surface of the lenses clean and transparent is a prerequisite for the lenses to exert their maximum optical performance. This is especially true for some higher-quality lenses that cost thousands or even tens of thousands of yuan.

Many people have a misconception that the more expensive the lenses are, the less likely they are to be damaged. I spent 8,000 yuan on my glasses, so they should be hard to break. In fact, that's not entirely the case.

Today's lenses are mostly made of resin. Whether they are domestic lenses that cost 500 yuan or international brand lenses that cost 5,000 yuan, their basic raw materials may be the same. Moreover, the coating on the surface of the lenses is particularly vulnerable to high temperatures and oil stains. No matter how good the lenses you have are, their optical performance will decline rapidly under the erosion of high temperatures and oil stains.

Therefore, I suggest that everyone should attach importance to the protection of lenses and maintain clean and transparent lenses, which is very important for maintaining the degree of vision and achieving the best eyesight.

Don't throw away your old glasses. Put them in the kitchen and let them continue to serve you.
